Russian investment market in IT fell by 43% in 2015

The economic recession affected virtually all segments of the industry - in 2015, the volume of venture capital investments in IT and Internet projects decreased by 43% compared with 2014. In general, the volume of investments fell to 34.2 billion rubles, and the number of transactions decreased from 280 to 225 on an annualized basis.

Until 2014, the opposite picture was observed - the number of transactions and investments grew, and the decline was due to the difficulties of the Russian economy, which led to a decrease in the amount of money in the venture capital market, as stated by the head of the foreign media department of the IIDF Sergei Skrypnikov to the Vedomosti publication. Among the most promising areas for investors was medicine, the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence. In 2015 alone, the volume of investment in these areas increased from 27 million to 641 million rubles. But interest in start-ups in the gaming industry, e-commerce, social networks, tourism has fallen markedly.

The number of presowing investments decreased by 5%, but in total for the year 7 such transactions were concluded, which hardly allows a sober assessment of this segment. Despite the decrease in transactions at the seed stage by 14%, the total volume of investments grew by 17%, which was caused by the appearance of better startups on the market.

Analysts at FRIA point out that in the investment market at a late stage, there is a drop in the number of transactions by 62% and 48% in terms of the volume of investments. But not all market specialists agree with the results of the FRIA research. So, one of the managing partners of the Buran VC fund, Alexander Konoplyasty, believes that things are much worse on the market than in the IIDF research.

The main problem in the market was the lack of investors who are considering the purchase of any developed startup. Alexey Soloviev from Prostor Capital also claims a similar problem - due to a decrease in the available funds in the Russian economy, the existing funds did not raise enough money for subsequent investment in 2015. But according to Solovyov’s estimates, in 2015 one should not wait for a new market decline.

Buran VC analyst Alexander Konoplyasty does not agree with this opinion and predicts a decline in 2016. But in any case, now start-ups should focus primarily on the foreign investment market and consumers, in order to ensure the most stable revenue indicators, which would not depend on the volatility of the exchange rate.
