The main suspect: the purchase of the VimpelCom WiFi network is beneficial for the Internet provider Er-Telecom

Tomorrow, January 29, VimpelCom should select potential buyers for its Moscow WiFi network for due diligence. In December 2015, the operator put up a network for sale as part of the exemption from non-core assets.

According to Vimpelcom, its WiFi network is the largest in Europe. At the end of last year, he sent out offers to a number of operators, although without indicating the price. VimpelCom promises to transfer equipment and rental contracts for technological positions to the buyer.

Representatives of MegaFon , MTS and T2 RTK Holding ( Tele2 ) claim that they are not interested in the VimpelCom WiFi network.
The company “Prestige-Internet”, which operates on the corporate market under the Enforta brand, has responded to the offer.

According to one of the interlocutors of Vedomosti, the price of a WiFi network should not exceed $ 5 million. But such an amount would have to be spent only on infrastructure equipment and wireless access points, if we were to build a similar WiFi network from scratch, Alkhas Mirzabekov, the general director of Iskratelekom, had previously calculated.

WiFi network went to VimpelCom along with fixed-line operator Golden Telecom , which it acquired for $ 4.3 billion in February 2008. Golden Telecom then spent about $ 10 million on the creation of 6 thousand access points in Moscow cafes, airports and other places. From the materials of VimpelCom, it follows that at the end of 2015 there were already 10,500. In October 2015, 50,000 subscribers were connected to them.

The asset is unlikely to be of interest to most operators, since Moscow is already tightly covered by 3G and LTE networks, the speed of which is high, and traffic is not expensive, Mirzabekov said. But for Prestige Internet, which connects corporate and municipal customers with wireless technologies, the WiFi network is a profile asset, he is sure.

In January 2016, the permission of the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) to acquire the Prestige-Internet company was obtained by Er-Telecom Holding , the largest regional Internet provider, Vedomosti reports. The purchase of Prestige Internet would double the Er-Telecom corporate customer base, according to analyst at TMT Consulting, Kirill Tatus. In his opinion, in this case, the income of ER-Telecom in the corporate segment would also double.

The purchase of Prestige Internet would allow Er-Telecom to begin full-fledged work on the corporate market in Moscow, and through the WiFi network the company could theoretically gain access to retail subscribers, says Telecom Daily CEO Denis Kuskov.

A possible purchase of VimpelCom's WiFi network is unlikely to strengthen Prestige Internet or E-Telecom’s positions on the Moscow retail market, but it will help Enforte to expand existing projects to provide services to corporate clients, a source close to one of the operators.
