Lyft will pay drivers $ 12.25 million in compensation, but does not recognize its employees

Today, Lyft agreed to pay drivers $ 12.25 million in compensation and give them certain benefits, as well as to warn them in advance about disconnecting from the service. But at the same time, Lyft will no longer recognize them as employees of the company (the service provides car-sharing services, that is, an ordinary driver comes for you - he may have other passengers in the cabin).

This decision was filed in the process of regulating the claim, to which one of the drivers tried to get recognition by his employee and the right to pay for travel expenses.

Lyft and his biggest rival, Uber, faced different lawsuits in San Francisco federal court. Drivers want to be recognized as employees, including to receive money from the company for fuel and car maintenance. Now these costs are completely on the taxi drivers.

The proceedings are closely monitored by the media, because the result may affect the assessment of other start-ups that work with individuals as contractors - taxi services, house cleaning and others.

Driver advocate calls the settlement result “significant.” Although the drivers did not become “employees” of Lyft, they received important advantages and guarantees, like official employees. Lyft will be able to disconnect drivers from the system only for special reasons - for example, a low assessment of their work as passengers, and prior to deactivation, drivers will receive a warning.
