Free access to the Internet.org network in India blocked for limited resources

Facebook's plan to provide free access to some online resources for people in India has encountered a problem. Indian telecommunications regulators have blocked the Free Basics mobile service, known as Internet.org, due to network neutrality issues. The program allows mobile users to access a limited number of services, including online stores, health and employment sites, Wikipedia and, of course, Facebook itself.

Facebook claims that it provides access to the network to a billion people who otherwise would not have been able to access any sites. But due to network neutrality activists and other representatives of the industry, this access is blocked, since the amount of resources is limited by Facebook partners.

Mark Zuckerberg in 2015 decided to provide free Internet access to people who are experiencing material problems with it. According to him, two thirds of entrepreneurs in the world do not have access to the Internet - they live in poor countries. The Internet.org project should offer benefits in the form of access to education, health information and jobs. Facebook, Ericsson, MediaTek, Nokia, Opera, Qualcomm and Samsung are working on the project.

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has criticized the project . Activists believe Facebook’s position is hypocritical: in their opinion, Internet.org is not neutral, is not secure, and it’s not the Internet at all. “However, we doubt the way chosen to solve this problem. As we and others have noted, there is a real risk that the few sites that Facebook and partners have chosen to access via Internet.org (including, of course, the Facebook site itself) can turn into a kind of ghetto for poor users instead of become a stepping stone to the big Internet, ”the Foundation said in a statement in May 2015.

India’s telecommunications regulators are currently discussing network neutrality , which they believe could violate Internet.org. Free access to mobile internet from Facebook is blocked in the country . Facebook encourages users to vote for the project in India to continue.
