Apple and the Swedish manufacturer of telecommunications equipment
Ericsson settled a patent dispute. The conflict lasted almost a year. But now the companies have signed an agreement,
reports Reuters.
The agreement allowed companies to settle a legal dispute and start cooperation. “We are pleased to conclude this new agreement with Apple, which opens the way for both companies to bring new technologies to the world market and opens up more business opportunities in the future,” said Ericsson director of intellectual property Kassim Alfalahi.

The agreement implies cross-licensing for patents of both companies that are significant for the standard. These include patents for GSM, UMTS and LTE cellular standards. “Peaceful” arrangements extend not only to the latest generation of 4G-LTE mobile communication technologies, but also to earlier technologies — 2G and 3G, Kasim Alfalahi said. “This means that we can continue to work with Apple in areas such as 5G wireless networks and network optimization,” he explained.
Against the background of the settlement of the dispute with Apple, Ericsson expects the growth of total revenue from intellectual property rights in 2015 from 9.9 billion kronor to 13-14 billion kroner ($ 1.5- $ 1.6 billion). According to analysts at investment bank ABG Sundal Collier, the agreement means that Ericsson will charge Apple about 0.5% of its sales from the iPad and iPhone.
In mid-January 2015, the license agreement between Apple and Ericsson expired. Ericsson has
demanded to ban the sale of Apple mobile devices in the United States. The reason was the refusal of the American company to pay license fees to Ericsson for technologies that are used in Apple. The company Ericsson intended to achieve this through the courts.
Apple filed a lawsuit in a US court, accusing Ericsson of violating patents on its data transmission technology in LTE (4G) networks.
Ericsson has sued seven new lawsuits, accusing Apple of violating 41 patents on 2G and 4G wireless communications, information display, energy-saving technologies and the principles of the mobile operating system.
