The illusion of progress: the Internet does not affect the speed of job search in Russia and other countries

Consulting company Boston Consulting Group and the research organization Recruit Works Institute surveyed more than 13,000 applicants from 13 countries - Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, South Africa, Great Britain, USA, India, China. 59% of the 3 billion employed people in the world (i.e. 1.7 billion) live in these countries. Researchers have figured out how and where people are looking for new work in the age of computer technology.

Analysts identified several job search channels: commercial (print publications, websites for job search on the Internet, non-state vocational training programs and private employment services), state (state retraining programs, employment services), direct and referral (alumni communities, family connections and friends). Approximately 40% of job seekers in the world used only one channel for job search, and about 25% used two channels.

According to the survey, 55% of respondents were looking for a new job through the Internet, 36% used print media, 33% used referral channels, 24% sent requests directly to potential employers, 20% involved relevant social services, and another 17% applied to recruitment agencies permanent staff.

In Russia, the most popular job search channels are via the Internet (76%) and referral (69%). 40% of respondents used print media, and only 11% applied to recruitment agencies. 23% of applicants addressed the employer directly.

On average, in 13 countries, about 33% of Internet users consider it to be the most effective job search channel; referral channels are considered effective by 19% of applicants.

Direct communication with the employer and print publications are considered effective only 12% and 10% respectively. Social services for employment considered effective only 5%.

In Russia, the largest number of respondents (48%) consider the Internet to be the most effective channel for finding a job. However, the referral channels and appeals to the employer directly received from the Russians only 9% of the vote, the print media - 6%. At the same time, 20% of applicants in Russia find work with the help of former colleagues. The average job search time in Russia was only 11 weeks. This is less than four out of seven countries with high GDP growth rates.

Less time is spent on job search in India and China - for 9 weeks, and most of all - in Italy (20 weeks) and South Africa (19 weeks). In the US, the average job search period is 13, in the UK and Canada - 14, in Germany - 13, in France - 17, in Japan - 12.

As a result of the study, the authors came to the conclusion that “the progress in the field of recruiting technologies led to both an increase and a decrease in the time for searching for a job. On the one hand, job advertisements on the Internet allow employers to reach a wide target audience with one click of the mouse. On the other hand, today, applicants can subscribe to new vacancy announcements and spend more time searching, since they only periodically review vacancies, ”Kommersant reports .
