Mozilla received the main income from contracts with search engines

The Mozilla Foundation, known for its Firefox browser, published a financial report for 2014. From the document it follows that Mozilla received the main income from contracts with search engines Google and Yahoo - the share of these payments in the entire revenue of the company exceeds 90%. For the fact that Google was the default search engine in Firefox, the fund received $ 280 million in 2012, $ 282 million in 2013, and in 2014 Mozilla refused to renew the agreement with the search giant and instead entered into an agreement with Yahoo. Despite this, Mozilla's total revenue increased by 4.9% to $ 330 million.

In November last year, Mozilla abandoned the “single” agreement with Google and chose to pursue a more flexible policy. Since then, the default search engine in the US browser is Yahoo, in Russia Yandex takes the place, and Baidu in China. At the same time, despite the lack of agreements with the search giant, in Europe, Google continues to be the default search in Firefox without any payments.

It should be noted that, if Mozilla feels rather well for the business itself, there are significant problems in its other projects. So the draft mobile operating system for smartphones of the lowest price level FirefoxOS has not yet reached its goal - this has been previously recognized by Mozilla CEO Chris Bird (Chris Beard). The whole niche that the foundation was counting on is now occupied by Android, and now Mozilla is only making separate attempts to popularize Firefox OS, having released, for example, recently imitating its Android operating system.

Earlier it was reported about serious financial problems in the Finnish startup Jolla, which produces the mobile operating system Sailfish OS. More than half of the company's employees will be laid off, which, however, will not prevent the new Jolla tablets from entering the market.
