“Snapchat” from e-commerce barely strayed from the offer to sell Alibaba and Amazon for $ 10 billion

Practice increasingly shows that not all can be bought for money. Even if we are talking about the absorption of a startup by a large company.

Snapchat at one time did not want to be sold to Facebook for $ 3 billion. Snapchat founders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy could earn $ 750 million, but decided not to sell the company. Snapchat is a mobile messaging app with attached photos and videos.

Apparently, in the e-commerce sphere a similar situation is brewing. American ecommerce platform Wish has been around for 5 years. It is even more difficult for the founders of this startup to defend their independence: last year, two buyers, Alibaba and Amazon, immediately went to the CEO of Wish. They are among the largest online retailers in the world. These two retailers had to compete with each other in the negotiation process with the leadership of Wish. After all, everyone wants to own the company individually.

Thus, the expected amount of the transaction eventually increased to indecently large - $ 10 billion. Amazon offered this amount. However, CEO of start-up Peter Shulzhevski, to put it mildly, is in no hurry to answer. Is he waiting for Alibaba to offer more?

The proposed amount is more than three times the Wish rating. According to crunchbase, in June 2015, a startup raised $ 500 million from the DST Global fund in round D. In total, the project raised about $ 600 million.

Sources close to the situation claim that retailers will not offer an amount above $ 10 billion. If so, then the head of the Wish deliberately "went to rejection."

But Peter Shulzhevski expects that he will be able to increase the gross sales of his ecommerce platform to $ 100 billion, writes Business Insider. This amount is one quarter of Walmart revenue. If everything happens as Shulzhevski has conceived, Wish will be able to get a valuation above $ 10 billion.

The company, according to various estimates, employs from 11 to 50 employees. Prices for Wish products do not exceed $ 25. Retailer operates in Europe, USA and China. Wish attracts users with its low prices. The platform is used by about 100 million people. The vast majority of them make purchases using mobile devices. About 100 thousand vendors cooperate with Wish.

According to a source close to the company, the main components of its success are effective customer acquisition through social networks and the “information-oriented” (data-driven) approach.

Are Alibaba and Amazon afraid of competing with Wish in some markets? Or do they see in the transaction only an opportunity to expand the audience? In any case, by offering such large sums, they confirm that the company has good prospects in the e-commerce market.
