The operator
Vimpelcom offered for sale 50 thousand towers for base stations in Russia and the near abroad. The company plans to get $ 5 billion for them.
Vimpelcom is ready to sell towers in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Georgia.
According to interlocutors Bloomberg, the operator thus tries to compensate for their losses.
In the period from 1990 to 2000s, Vimpelcom more actively than other operators built and bought towers throughout Russia. But now that the company has suffered significant losses, its priorities have changed.
The sale of the towers is carried out as part of a strategy to reduce operating expenses. To implement this strategy, Vimpelcom invited a new CEO.

On the deal, Vimpelcom consults with banks

Merrill Lynch and investment company
TAP Advisors ,
writes Bloomberg. Vimpelcom is also considering separating the towers into a separate company. If this happens, the new company may continue to enter the IPO, the interlocutors believe.
The final decision on the sale of towers in the company is not accepted.
According
to Interfax, Vimpelcom had previously planned to sell 10-11 thousand towers in Russia. The operator then consulted Merrill Lynch to prepare the deal. Why the transaction did not take place - the representatives of Vimpelcom do not comment. However, they noted that the company is looking for opportunities to get rid of non-core assets.
In addition to Vimpelcom, the allocation of towers in a separate company for its sale or transfer to management is considered by Megafon. The operator planned to get rid of 14 thousand towers.
Vimpelcom already has experience selling towers. In March of this year, the Italian subsidiary of the
Wind Telecomunicazioni holding company concluded an agreement with the Spanish
Abertis Telecom Terrestre to sell 90% of Galata shares. The latter owns 7,377 towers. The amount of the transaction amounted to 693 million euros.
