Viber transfers its servers with personal data of Russians in the Russian Federation

Since September 1 of this year, amendments to the laws “On Personal Data” and “On Information, Information Technologies and Protection of Information” have been made in Russia. In accordance with the new rules, companies (domestic and foreign) that work with personal data of Russian users are required to store this data in Russia.

Many companies have complied with the requirements of the law, and one of these companies is Viber, according to Izvestia. The management has already reported on the transfer of the company's servers with the data of domestic users in the data centers of Russia.

“Phone numbers, logins and user passwords will be stored in Russia. We don’t store messages, they are on users ’devices,” said Viber Media’s Moscow representative Elena Gracheva. Lawyers of the company considered that the messenger is subject to the law, therefore, the data must be transferred.

Recall that this year Roskomnadzor will not check various Internet services, including Facebook, Twitter, Google, Samsung. Checks on the implementation of the law will begin only next year. However, the largest telecommunications companies in the world, including Google, AliExpress , Ebay, PayPal, Apple , Booking.com and others, began transferring data in the summer.
