Apple TV leads online cinema talks on entering the Russian market

Apple may launch its multimedia project Apple TV in Russia. The corporation is negotiating the development of applications for the project with Russian online cinemas and video services ivi.ru , Okko , Nemo TV , and Amediatek .

“The products of each company will have all the possible functionality, but it is likely that special, feature-enhanced versions of applications will be released,” said a source of Kommersant.

"This is one of the most promising environments for VoD applications (Video on Demand) given the iOS billing activity," he adds. After all, it is known that the Apple audience is distinguished by high solvency in Russia.

"Everything will be organized in the same way as in the iTunes Store, that is, when selling content through applications, Apple will take a commission from each operation," said Redmadrobot CTO Arthur Sakharov.

Apple TV is a digital player that plays streaming media (movies, music, podcasts, photos) to widescreen LCD TVs and plasma panels from the iTunes library. The number of Russian residents using Apple TV is tens of thousands, a representative of the Russian mobile retail market estimates. According to him, the main audience of the product is concentrated in Moscow, where all categories of Apple products are popular - from iPod to iMac, Kommersant reports .

Apple TV exists in two editions. The first does not work in Russia and the CIS. The second one recently changed the application publishing policy and became similar to Smart TV . The similarity lies in the pattern of relationships with application vendors. That is, to publish in the first edition of the application was possible only with close ties with Apple, in the second - applications will be published by analogy with applications on the iPhone and iPad, confirms one of the developers.

Indeed, during the September presentation, not only the updated Apple TV was announced, but also the SDK set (development kit) for it, says Arthur Sakharov. “For the market, these are positive changes. The share of smart TV devices is high, but content consumption through such devices is still undeveloped. The complex interface, inconvenient management, lack of integration with mobile and desktop devices - all these shortcomings will disappear with the introduction of Apple TV to the Russian market, ”he continues.

The founder of Tvigle, Yegor Yakovlev, on the contrary, believes that the prospects for an Apple TV device in Russia are unclear for a number of reasons, including piracy, crisis and more familiar alternatives in the form of Smart TV.

"Apple with a new Apple TV goes into a highly competitive environment." Any platform, be it Smart TV or Apple TV, seeks to enter the market with high-quality content in the form of applications, they are its engine, says the general director of Megogo in Russia, Viktor Chekanov.
