Import substitution and GLONASS: the timing of the transition to domestic electronics

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin announced the timing of the transition of the Russian GLONASS navigation system to domestic electronics. Rogozin told this information during his speech at the international congress on the ERA-GLONASS system, RIA Novosti reports . According to the official, it will take about two years to complete import substitution.

“We have found solutions in moving fully to the national (electronic) component base in 1.5-2 years,” Rogozin said. He also added that the Russian government plans to form an order for domestic microelectronics before the end of 2015.

Somewhat earlier, in July 2015, Dmitry Rogozin said that Russia is interested in purchasing an electronic component base for the space industry in China. And Andrey Tyulin, General Director of the Russian Space Systems Company, states that the import equipment may be replaced by products of domestic manufacturers.

Now electronics for space devices is produced mainly in the United States. Russia's purchase of equipment from the United States is difficult due to the sanctions.
