The reason is the entry into force on September 1 of the updated law on personal data. According to this law, all companies that work with personal data of Russian citizens are obliged to process and store this data in Russia,
writes Vedomosti. According to experts, thanks to this law, Russian commercial data centers will not be affected by the crisis, moreover, you will grow the business of domestic DCs this year.
According to IDC, at the end of 2013, the total number of racks in data centers in Russia was 26,500 units. Currently, the number of racks has grown to 30,000, says IDC senior analyst Mikhail Popov. The new law, according to Popov, contributed to the growth of the business of commercial data centers even before the personal data law came into force. The fact is that many Western companies have begun to take steps in advance to facilitate the transfer of personal data of Russians to the Russian Federation.
According to Ekaterina Andreeva, a representative of Technoserv, the law pushed a number of foreign banks, large retailers and some other companies to rent the capacity of Russian commercial data centers.

The words of Andreeva are confirmed by the Deputy Director General of DataLine Alexey Sevastyanov. Thus, international companies from retail and FMCG began to contact DataLine, plus well-known foreign Internet projects and manufacturers of electronic equipment. However, it is too early to speak about the explosive growth of requests caused by the operation of the law on personal data. Sevastyanov says that now the main income of the company is formed at the expense of old customers.
DataPro executive director Evgeny Bogdanchikov believes that, thanks to the personal data law, the market will grow by about 15% this year. This forecast applies both to the number of customers and to the number of rented racks.
An interesting point is the ratio of domestic and foreign data storage services. So, before data storage in Russia cost about 30% more expensive than abroad. And now, due to the devaluation of the ruble, the situation has changed, and the services of domestic companies have become 20–40% cheaper than foreign competitors, said Alexander Vechersky, a Selectel representative. He also added that by the end of the year, Selectel expects an increase in revenue.
