Media holding Axel Springer sells the Russian edition of Forbes and leaves Russia

German media holding Axel Springer plans to leave the Russian market in connection with the law on the 20% restriction of foreign capital in Russian media. The law will come into force in 2016. For several months, Axel Springer Russia has been negotiating the sale of its assets. The management of the holding has been thinking about this since 2013.

According to the new amendments to the Law “On Mass Media”, since January 2016, foreigners are prohibited from directly or indirectly owning more than 20% of any Russian media. Therefore, now foreign investors can either leave the Russian market or reorganize the business so that it meets the new requirements. Previously, due to this law, entrepreneur Viktor Shkulev brought his share to 80% in the publishing house Hearst Shkulev Media .

“Forbes is one of the few objects in the magazine market that is of commercial interest, powerful and brings good money,” notes the head of one of the Russian media holdings. However, the situation in the advertising market does not allow to ask for a high price, he believes. According to the Association of Communication Agencies of Russia, in the first half of the year advertising fees of magazines fell by 33%, to 5.5 billion rubles.

In the story of the sale of the Russian edition of Forbes, there is a third party - the company Forbes Media . She owns the rights to the brand edition. The Kommersant interlocutor claims that Axel Springer is ready to close the asset, and Forbes Media plans to transfer it to a new partner.
