I will give the Internet in good hands: ICANN's independence day is postponed for another year

The US authorities are postponing the transfer of the main structure in managing the Internet to a group of independent shareholders.

In the coming year, the Domain Name and IP Address Management Corporation ( ICANN ) will remain under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Commerce. The contract may be extended subsequently for another three years, said US Deputy Secretary of Commerce Lawrence Strickling.

“After the last few months, it has become obvious that the community still needs time to complete its work, submit its plan to the US government for evaluation and then apply it if approved,” said Mr. Strickling.

The ministry expects that the additional year should be a sufficient period of time to think through all the details of the work of the group of shareholders who will gain control over ICANN, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Since 1998, control over ICANN has always been exercised by the US authorities. However, last year, the administration of Barack Obama offered to transfer the company into the hands of independent shareholders until September 2015. On August 5, Geektimes wrote that on July 31 a specially created coordination group (ICG) published a plan for the gradual transfer of ICANN. Critics of the initiative fear that after this the governments of countries that are not ready to accept such Western values as freedom of speech, for example, can influence the Internet. This, in their opinion, can create additional stress on all cyberspace.
