IBM has announced the acquisition of
Merge Healthcare , which is developing solutions for collecting, archiving, viewing and transmitting images related to medicine, IBM
said in an official statement. The amount of the transaction is $ 1 billion, the transaction itself is scheduled to close before the end of 2015.
The transaction allows you to combine the processing and transmission tools of radiographs and images with ultrasound, which are developed by Merge Healthcare, with the capabilities of the Watson Health Cloud cloud service. After that, IBM can become one of the largest (if not the largest) solution providers in the US healthcare industry.
According to IBM Research, approximately 90% of all data stored by US medical facilities is images, radiographs and ultrasound results. At the same time, doctors have to examine hundreds and thousands of images per day.
Currently, Merge Healthcare solutions are used by more than 7.5 thousand US medical facilities. In addition, the same solutions are used by leading medical companies from around the world, including pharmaceutical organizations.
