Good day.
Yesterday,
without a declaration of war, unexpectedly for all,
MPEG-LA announced its intention to create a pool of MPEG-DASH patents .
MPEG-LA is an organization to which the owners of many media streaming patents have delegated the collection of a variety of royalties for their patents. These patents are pooled, which allows licensees to deposit money "in one window" in exchange for the right to use the technology, and for licensors to receive their share of small amounts without unnecessary movements.
')
Let me remind you that MPEG-DASH is an approved ISO standard, which is developed and promoted by the DASH Industry Forum consortium (
DASH-IF ). Our company, by the way, is also
included . The standard has been officially adopted, now there are active improvements in technology to meet the needs of various related areas, for example, inserting advertisements into streams, improving security, etc.
Against this background, this MPEG-LA statement was very unexpected. So unexpected that even the leading developers and popularizers of the standard could not say anything essentially.
Someone just
deployed stated the strangeness of the situation itself. The discussion groups of developers of the standard are also silent for the time being, digesting the situation.
It is noteworthy that at the dawn of the creation of the standard, the participants of the working group openly declared the refusal of patent prosecution for working with DASH. From what is at hand,
you can, for example, mention Qualcomm . Similar statements were made by other key players.
The comparison with HEVCAdvance, the newly announced patent pool for HEVC, is also interesting. Declared considerable royalties increase the already large threshold of entry into the technology, which caused a lot of condemnation from the developer community.
Probably this week there will be a more sensible community response with explanations. We will follow the development.
