The law on the "right to oblivion" was approved by the Federation Council

On July 8, the Federation Council approved the law on the “right to oblivion” adopted by the State Duma.

Search engines will be obliged to remove links to irrelevant information on the application of the user. Irrelevant in this case is information that "has lost its value for the applicant due to subsequent events or actions." However, the applicant still has to prove that the information is irrelevant. This is especially true of "unreliable" and "disseminated in violation of the law" information, RBC reports .

It became known earlier that the clause on deleting references to reliable information at the request of the user was deleted from the bill. Applicants will also be required to provide the exact URL of the information they are asking to remove. Moreover, the applicant can hope that the information will be deleted only if his first name and last name are mentioned there. In addition, it will be denied to remove references to reports of criminal acts with no expiration of statute of limitations.

In autumn, the Duma will consider the second bill, which regulates penalties for search engines for an unreasonable refusal to remove links to information about users. At the same time, the bill provides for the automatic charging of a fine in the amount of 100 thousand rubles in case the court recognizes the refusal of the search service to remove the link as unjustified. If the search engine refuses to delete the link after that, the amount of the fine increases to 3 million rubles.

The State Duma Committee on Information Policy believes that the introduction of fines for search engines for refusing to remove links to information about users is redundant.
