The number of smartphone users globally will exceed 2 billion in 2016, according to data from
eMarketer , after approaching this figure by the end of 2015. This year there will be about 1.9 billion smartphone users worldwide, and in 2016 this figure will increase by 12.6% and reach 2.16 billion.

For the first time, more than a quarter of the world's population will use smartphones already this year, and by 2018 more than a third of the world's consumers, or more than 2.56 billion people, are estimated by eMarketer.
This figure for 2018 also reflects more than half (51.7%) of all mobile phone users, which means that functional telephones will finally recede into the background in the world of telecommunications.

Inexpensive smartphones open up new opportunities for marketing and commerce in emerging markets, where previously many users did not have access to the Internet. In the meantime, in mature, established markets, smartphones are rapidly changing the paradigm of media consumption and point out the need for marketers to become more mobile-oriented.
19 new countries have been added to the eMarketer mobile users forecast, which totals 41 countries, including initial estimates for various individual countries in the Middle East and Africa.
In the forecast period, eMarketer expects other stages that will take place year after year by country:
By the end of 2015: Russia will overtake Japan and will become the 4th largest country using smartphones
2016: In India, the number of smartphone users will exceed 200 million and it will bypass America, becoming the second largest smartphone market
2017: The number of smartphone users in America will exceed 200 million, accounting for about 65% of the total population.
2018: The number of smartphone users in Indonesia will pass the mark of 100 million, which will firmly secure the 4th place for the country on this indicator
Next come 25 global countries, ranked by the number of smartphone users in 2014, according to eMarketer estimates.

At the heart of all eMarketer forecasts is a multi-pronged approach focused simultaneously on global and local trends in the development of the economy, technology and population, which at the same time takes into account the peculiarities of the development trends of companies, products, countries, demography and consumer behavior. eMarketer analyzes the quantitative and qualitative data obtained from a variety of research companies, government agencies, the media and enterprises' reports, weighing each piece of information and based on the methodology and reasonableness principle. In addition, all elements of each forecast form the basis for a larger matrix of all their forecasts with the same assumptions and basic structure used for planning indicators in a wide range of areas. Regular revaluation of each forecast means that these assumptions and structure are constantly updated, which allows to reflect new market changes and trends.
