In Europe, asking to introduce uniform legislation for telecom operators and Internet companies

The largest European operators called on the President of the European Council Donald Tusk and the leaders of 28 EU countries to introduce common regulatory standards for telecom operators, broadband Internet access providers and Internet companies. Top managers of Deutsche Telekom , the Dutch KPN , the French Orange and the Spanish Telefonica sent a corresponding letter in which they expressed dissatisfaction with the “asymmetry in relation to traditional telecom operators and Internet companies”.

Applications such as WhatsApp , Facebook messengers and Google services use the infrastructure of telecommunications companies, but do not fall under the same regulatory standards as telecom operators.

“The current rules for regulating the telecommunications industry should be completely revised, as a result, there should appear a common platform for various digital services, designed for a long term. Leading investors consider regulation the most important factor in the development of the industry. Meanwhile, much tougher regulations exist in the EU than in other regions of the world, ” says a fragment of the letter to the Financial Times.

Some rules and laws in force today are no longer relevant. One example is the rule that obliges European operators to provide broadband channels at low prices to competitors.

Next week, EU authorities plan to discuss the concept of creating a single digital market at a meeting in Brussels. However, operators are afraid that the discussion will be delayed and the changes will be too slow.
