Eurocommission investigates noncompetitive behavior of Amazon
The European Commission is conducting an investigation into the business of Amazon e-books. According to the European Commission, the company's contracts with publishers contain provisions that may protect Amazon from competition from other vendors.
Amazon’s contracts with publishers give the company the right to be informed about more favorable or alternative conditions, they write on the website of the European Commission . The commission fears that such provisions make it impossible for other e-book distributors to compete with Amazon. The investigation will show whether Amazon’s contracts with publishers narrow down customer choices and violate antitrust laws.
The Commissioner for Competition Policy of the European Commission: “Amazon has developed a successful business that offers consumers a full range of services, including for e-books. My responsibility is to ensure that Amazon’s publisher mechanisms do not harm consumers by preventing effective competition from other e-book distributors with Amazon. ” ')
Amazon tells Arstechnica: “Amazon is confident that our agreements with publishers are legitimate and in the best interests of our readers. We will demonstrate this to the Commission during the investigation process. ”
Apple faced similar accusations in the United States and donated $ 450 million to settle the case in court. Apple's contracts with publishers have freed the company from the need for price competition.
