Free service for tracking down lost laptops

Nowadays, losing a laptop means losing much of your digital life. The loss of important photos, notes, passwords, web links, files is often much more important than a few hundred dollars on new hardware. That is why yesterday's launch of the Adeona project is so important for all of us.

Adeona is an open and free project. Named after the Roman goddess Adeona, who helped lost children find their way back to their mother, this service tracks the IP address of the lost laptop. The service works simply: you first need to download a special spyware (with open source), after installation, this program starts sending encrypted messages to the distributed hosting of OpenDHT . If the laptop is ever lost, the user downloads another program, enters his username and password, and receives all the information in decrypted form, including the IP addresses of all laptop connections to the Internet, as well as service information about all surrounding routers (Wi-Fi hotspots -Fi) This data can be quite enough to calculate the attacker and quickly return the loss.

The Mac version of Adeony can even use the webcam built into the laptop and take a snapshot of the intruder.

All the logic of the system is sharpened so that even service operators cannot get private information about the owner of the laptop in the process of spyware. All code is open and reliable cryptography is used, so that without knowing the login and password, private data cannot be decrypted.

In alternative commercial services, firstly, private data is not so well protected, and, secondly, these services are simply not free.

Since the program code is open, any developer can improve the program and create a version, for example, to track down lost “iPhones”.
