Jonathan (Johnny) Ive, known throughout the world for his own design genius and patronage of company founder Steve Jobs, today was appointed Apple's director of design.

Recall - he previously held the position of senior vice president of industrial design. Quince's place in the company will be taken by Richard Howard, and Alan Dye will be the head of the user interface department (both subordinate to Quince).

Jonathan Ive took his what seemed to be the permanent position of the head of industrial design in 1997. Under his leadership, almost all product lines were created: iMac, iPod, iPad and of course the Apple Watch.

Steve Jobs called Jonathan Quince his "spiritual partner" in the company.
