Last year, amendments were made to the law “On Mass Media”. According to these amendments, from 2016 foreign owners will be prohibited from owning more than 20% of Russian companies registered as media. Such a company is
the Yandex.Probki service. And while he does not meet the requirements of the amendments.
Yandex.Probki is registered as an information agency and has a corresponding certificate.
Yandex is owned by the Netherlands-based company Yandex NV. Its shares
are traded on NASDAQ. To avoid prosecution under the law, it is enough for a company to annul the certificate of registration of the Yandex.Probki service as mass media. This is the easiest solution to the problem.
According
to RBC, the
Pronto-Moscow company has already done this. Its owner is the Turkish company
Dogan Group . So the status of the media was canceled on the sites
irr.ru and
job.ru.')
However, representatives of Yandex fear that the introduction of amendments may continue. It is possible that the restriction of the share of foreign owners will extend to Internet companies as a whole. And this may lead to a change in the management of the company and a fall in the value of its shares.
Last year, State Duma deputy Andrei Lugovoy demanded that
Yandex.News be registered as media. But then the General Prosecutor’s Office did not support his initiative. Nevertheless, Yandex assumes that in the future such services will be recorded as mass media forcibly.
