Idea top4top

For a start, a link on how this project was represented by its creators. Of course, we can say that the idea was to create an elite site with elite content, elite content producers and all that. But I'm not interested in it now. And not the technical features of the implementation, which are not just kicked lazy, and not miscalculations in public relations. I am interested in, due to what they planned to achieve the desired elitism. This is what I call the idea of top4top here .

Now I’ll practically repeat the thoughts that I expressed in the discussion on this topic on Exler’s blog six months ago. In fact, in one aspect, the Topov project has the same idea as the Habr project - it is a (giant) Internet newspaper / magazine, the content of which is created by its users. The difference is only in the selection mechanism of the best - on Habré it is a system of user ratings, while the Tops went in a seemingly more traditional way - the usual journal editors increased proportionally to the alleged number of people writing to a very large editorial : “ edition of 150 people, and not just 30 moderators, which were discussed in the release. " However, the idea of a large edition is rather unusual for the Internet (maybe not only for the Internet), since it has not been tested anywhere, as I understand it. And the flawiness of this approach is not obvious, even despite the failure of Tops - it is not clear what played a major role in this failure - the above-mentioned miscalculations or the fallacy of the idea of a large editorial board. In general, the idea of the project, where users' materials are edited, is quite viable, judging by the Roem project. (However, in the latter case, the matter is simplified by the fact that there is, as far as I understand, only one editor - Yury Synodov). A similar idea and the project Arthur Welf IdeaBlog . Moreover, in general, this is in line with the new Internet trend .

The second nontrivial move in the Tops concept is to hire intellectuals (although there’s more to talk about celebrities, these are different things :) for writing elite content. Of course, this move is not for ordinary startups, but with their budget they could afford it. And they could, I suppose, derive a lot of benefits from this, because where the elite hangs out, everyone else starts to hang out. This universal consideration can also be taken into account by ordinary startups, since Intellectuals can be attracted not only with money, but also, probably, with intellect too :)
