Vivendi plans to become the majority shareholder of the largest French video hosting Dailymotion

According to the Financial Times, the French-based Vivendi media group is in talks with Orange SA about buying shares of the Dailymotion video hosting. The amount of the transaction may be 250 million euros, which will provide Vivendi the status of the majority shareholder, - writes the French newspaper Le Figaro.

Previously it was assumed that the Hong Kong telecommunications company PCCW would buy the video host, since its negotiations with Orange had almost reached the final stage. It was about buying a 49% stake in Dailymotion. However, the deal did not take place due to the negative attitude of the French government to Asian investors. Moreover, the French government also did not allow the American company Yahoo! purchase video hosting, explaining it by the threat of restricting French Internet content. The amount of the transaction was to be about 279 million euros ($ 300 million). It is worth noting that the French government owns about 25% of Dailymotion shares.

Vivendi, the largest French media group, owns such assets as Universal Music Group, as well as mobile operator Maroc Telecom, cable TV network Canal + and a large stake in SFR, France’s second largest mobile operator.

Dailymotion is the third most visited media host in the world. First place is occupied by YouTube, the second - Vimeo. Every month, the number of Dailymotion video views reaches 2.5 billion, and the number of unique users is estimated at 128 million people.

If the deal goes through, Vivendi will be able to offer Dailymotion exclusive video content that could be used to form premium premium channels.
