Intel plans to buy Altera

Altera On March 27, The Wall Street Journal announced the news of a possible acquisition by Intel of the well-known FPGA manufacturer (programmable logic integrated circuits) Altera . The planned transaction promises to be the largest for the entire existence of the company. Altera may be absorbed at a record $ 13.6 billion for Intel.

According to experts, the deal will help Intel retain a dominant position in the server market. Meanwhile, Business Insider analysts believe that Intel is going to diversify its revenues, 60% of which are currently tied to sales in the personal computer market. The acquisition of Altera will strengthen Intel's leadership in the industry and reduce its dependence on sales in the PC market.

Recently, the company seeks to take a large share of the data center equipment market. And in this context, the acquisition of Altera becomes quite predictable and logical action, because at the moment FPGA of this manufacturer is widely used in data processing centers. In addition, given the high barriers to entry and the high profitability of Altera, the acquisition is starting to make more and more sense.

Both companies declined to comment on the transaction. During the first report, released on Friday, Intel shares rose by about 4.5%, while Altera jumped more than 23%.
