IDC (International Data Corporation)
predicts that this year about 45.7 million devices will be delivered to the market, and by 2019 supplies may reach 126.1 million. The company explains this growth by a combination of efforts from new suppliers, designing and the withdrawal of new devices, as well as greater end-user awareness.
The focus of the industry this year is shifting to devices that provide the ability to launch third-party applications. Last year, it sold about 4.2 million devices like the Apple Watch, Motorola's 360 smartwatch and Samsung Gear. This year, growth is expected to 25.7 million units sold.
In the category of less intelligent devices, such as fitness trackers, growth is expected from 15.4 million units sold in 2014 to 20 million units.
The launch of Apple Watch this year will spur the market for such devices in general and will force new vendors to come to the market.

Wristwatches will account for more than 80% of all wearable devices. Since most manufacturers have focused on these products, IDC expects this trend to continue.

The next category will be modular wearable devices or those that can be worn on any part of the body with the appropriate fastener or belt. Modular devices are traditionally much easier to manufacture. The company also predicts the appearance and distribution of devices embedded in wardrobe items and glasses. Meanwhile, the market is rapidly shifting toward more expensive devices that offer more functionality.
