Google received a patent for smart contact lenses

The US Patent Office has granted Google patent No. 8,985,763 on multi-layer contact lenses with sensors and a microcontroller. The device can be used to measure temperature, glucose and cholesterol levels and blood alcohol levels. The lenses will leave their primary vision correction function.

In January 2014, Google received a US patent for smart lenses with a video camera . The documents described a device in the form of a contact lens containing an electrical circuit, a camera and sensors. The sensors of light, pressure, temperature and electric field were mentioned.

The Google X division has been working for a long time to create an “extended” version of a contact lens. First of all, experts added the ability to track glucose levels : the measurement takes place according to tears, and the LEDs alert the owner in case of problems. Presented in 2014, the prototype measured the level of sugar once a second. The device in combination with a mobile application will help to notify the host in time about the indicator's out of tolerance, and when working with a third device - an automatic insulin pump - it will be able to regulate sugar level. All information will receive the attending physician.

The next step for Google was the receipt in March 2015 of a patent for multilayer smart lenses and the method of their production. A layer with sensors will be added to the layer with the microcontroller, after which they will be “packed” into a polymer shell. The gadget is able to perform the function of vision correction, and moreover - will help with astigmatism: for this purpose contact lenses with an uneven surface are used, which is indicated in the patent.

Medical company Novartis in 2014 licensed contact lenses to Google and plans to turn the development of the Internet giant into a commercial product.
