Today,
Sony has published an interesting press release, which refers to a new, jointly with
Panasonic , project, the purpose of which is to develop the format of optical discs. "Development" means obtaining a high-capacity optical disc, at least 300 GB. And such carriers should be ready by the end of 2015 (and this is already very soon). Already there is a discussion of the specifications of the new standard and other issues related to the project.
According to the companies, optical discs have a future, as they are well protected from external influences. The optical disk is not affected by water, humidity and, to a certain extent, temperature. In addition, the discs are suitable for use in a variety of devices with a variety of formats.

Earlier, both Sony and Panasonic have developed their own optical media formats based on Blu-ray ™. However, now both companies have recognized the need for further development of the technology for creating optical discs, and concluded that it is important to work together.
It is worth noting that last year, Sony, and this year, Panasonic, launched a storage system based on an array of optical disks. For example, the device from Sony allows you to work with disks of 25 GB, with a total capacity of up to 1.5 TB. Probably, such systems can be adapted to optical discs of the new format, which will allow to achieve a significant increase in the working volume of data.
