For more than five years, the appeal against the lawsuit of the media organization Copiepresse, which unites the interests of a number of Belgian newspapers, has continued. In 2006, Copiepresse
won a lawsuit against Google . The court ordered the search giant to pay newspapers compensation for using their content in Google News.
Now the process is finally over, all possibilities for appeals have been exhausted. Google will still have to pay compensation, and in the future they may post content for Belgian newspapers to Google News only under direct contracts with each newspaper.
But Google was not limited to paying a fine. On Friday evening, the content of Belgian newspapers disappeared not only from Google News, but also from the main search results. Representatives of individual newspapers have already made an
indignant statement , reproaching Google for revenge.
In 2006, the Brussels Court of First Instance made a decision on compensation on the grounds that due to Google News, "the publishers of the daily press lose control of their websites and their content." Because of the news search engine, the attendance of newspaper sites is allegedly decreasing, because users get all the necessary information from a brief press on the Google News pages.

The reason for the claims from the publishers can also be understood, because Google, in fact, makes money on someone else's content, while the creators of this content and its owners do not receive a single penny from Google. Google discourages that there is no advertising on Google News and it does not make a profit on someone else’s work.
However, the Belgian court decided otherwise. According to the final verdict, Google will have to pay compensation of € 25,000 to each victim for each day that its content was posted on Google News without permission.
Google representatives commented that the removal from the search results was made in order to protect themselves from a future lawsuit in the event that a fine of € 25,000 also applies to the usual search results, and not just Google News. Representatives of the Belgian newspapers say that this was not the case, and Google misunderstood them.
