DDoS attack on Wikileaks has grown to 10 Gb / s, while Amazon is coping

Last night, the power of the second DDoS attack on the Wikileaks site exceeded 10 Gb / s . The site is still hosted on American and Irish Amazon Web Services servers, which so far successfully cope with the load.

Responsibility for the DDoS attack has already taken on some American "hacktivist» th3j35t3r (The Jester). On Twitter, he explains that Wikileaks "threatens the lives of our soldiers and other assets." The Jester blog says that he is doing his best on the Internet to “damage the communications lines of terrorists, sympathizers, intermediaries, helpers, tyrannical regimes and other bad guys.”

On Sunday, about 250 thousand secret diplomatic documents were published on Wikileaks. A few hours before this , a massive DDoS attack began on the site, which is still ongoing. Experts from Arbor Networks noticed that when the Swedish servers stopped coping with the workload, the Wikileaks DNS site changed from the Swedish hosting AS8473 to distributed hosting in Ireland (later in the USA).

According to the WHOIS database, you can see that it is hosting Amazon Web Services . The cablegate.wikileaks.org site, which directly posted the latest diplomatic documents, provides IP addresses for the Seattle data center Amazon Web Services ( 204.236.131.131 ), as well as for the French company Octopuce ( 91.194.60.90 ). The Wikileaks.org home page refers to American ( 184.72.37.90 ) and Irish ( 46.51.171.90 ) Amazon servers.

The choice of American hosting does not seem too reasonable in the light of the fact that influential US politicians are calling upon to equate the owners of this site to terrorists and judge them according to the Espionage Act. Americans can do this by obtaining the extradition of Julian Assange after his arrest by the Swedish authorities, who have already appealed to Interpol for the arrest of Assange in a case of sexual harassment.

At the same time, according to experts, the Amazon company is unlikely to face legal prosecution by the US authorities. According to lawyers, it is important that the information was made publicly available before Amazon servers began distributing it, which to some extent protects the company from charges. Moreover, the dissemination of information from the territory of the United States allows us to extend to it the effect of the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects freedom of speech.

Hosting Amazon guarantees the stability of the server, because it can withstand almost any DDoS attack, they have good experience in this matter. At least, now the site is working at a high level.
