President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko introduces unprecedented sanctions against Internet users, writes Federico Guerrini in a material published on the website of the newspaper
La Stampa .
“By his unprecedented decision, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko intends to de facto nationalize the Internet in his country. With the entry into force of the “Amendments to the Code of Administrative and Procedural Violations” on January 6 of this year, citizens of a small republic will not be able to visit foreign sites whose servers are located beyond national borders. For violation of the law, fines of up to 96 euros are provided for, ”the newspaper writes.
"This is more of a dissuasive than an effective policy towards most of the population," writes the author of the article.
')
“The new Lukashenka’s law will affect not only private individuals: enterprises operating in the territory of Belarus will be able to use only national domains, all transactions will be conducted through local Internet resources, and information about them will be available to both tax authorities and security services”, - emphasizes the author of the article.
“Tightened measures in relation to wi-fi networks: now the owners of local cafes and other institutions will be directly responsible for the actions of customers. It is not by chance that Belarus is considered one of the most closed regimes today, and few Western politicians decide to make visits to this country, ”the author writes.
