Recently, a British court rejected the latest appeal of lawyers Julian Assange and finally completed the process. Extradition to Sweden should have taken place in nine days - June 28, but now it is unlikely to take place. Yesterday afternoon, the founder of the Wikileaks project entered the territory of the Ecuadorian embassy in London and asked for political asylum.
Press release of the Embassy of Ecuador :
“As a country that signed the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, obliged to consider all applications for asylum, we immediately transmitted a statement to the relevant department in Quito.
')
While the department is considering the application, Mr. Assange will remain in the embassy, under the protection of the Government of Ecuador.
The decision to adopt Mr. Assange’s application for asylum should in no way be interpreted as Ecuador’s interference in the UK or Sweden lawsuits, ”the official statement of the embassy said.
The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry has published an additional
explanation that Julian Assange's home country, Australia, appears to have no plans to protect his citizen, which puts him in the status of "helpless." Therefore, he appealed to the Ecuadorian embassy.
The right to seek political asylum is prescribed in
Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Assange has not been formally charged with political charges, Sweden demands his extradition for “sexual crimes”, but Assange’s defense is confident that Sweden is acting on orders from the US, so Assange will be immediately extradited to America, where he will be charged in the Wikileaks case for publishing thousands of documents the Afghan and Iraq war; and the secret correspondence of American diplomats.
Extradition to Sweden was to take place before June 28th. Although Assange’s lawyers remained the last instance - an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights - but the filing of this appeal would not have prevented the extradition.
