State services are finally starting to encrypt their drives.
A few days ago a story hit the newspapers that the civil services had once again lost a hard disk with private information from citizens. This time, the Scottish ambulance distinguished itself: it sent its HDD contractor, which had records of 800 thousand emergency calls, addresses, telephone numbers and patient names. A disk with such valuable information was sent through the TNT postal service, and the courier lost it during transportation.
However, unlike all previous cases, now no one is completely worried about the missing disk. The fact is that all the information on the disk was encrypted and password protected.
This is definitely something new, writes Bruce Schneier on his blog. Government services are definitely starting to learn. In fact, the encrypted disk (if everything is done correctly) is absolutely not terrible to lose and can be sent even by regular mail, even if it is in the hands of the enemy - it can not extract anything from there.
