“As many as 8% of the traffic to your site gets the
Telegraph from various social sites like Digg, Delicious, Reddit, Stumbleupon,” said Julian Sambles, the head of audience development for the newspaper. What's so surprising about that? The fact is that this figure is
significantly higher than we previously expected . And she explains how the Telegraph became the most popular British newspaper.
Almost 75,000 visitors per day
The telegraph attracted about 28 million unique visitors in March. It turns out that about 75 thousand unique visitors per day come from social sites. Julian shared these numbers with me when I asked him for information on an
article on social news and bookmarking sites that I wrote for Fumsi. In addition, he said that about a third (that is, about 300 thousand) of traffic comes from search sites.

And this is what the Twitterfall informer looks like on the Telegraph website.
We drive on 500 articles per day
“We publish about 500 articles per day. The range of topics is very wide - from news to film and hotel reviews, ”said Julian. “All these articles can be found by coming to the site, but publication alone is not enough, it will limit the size of the audience. By working on how this content can be distributed and found, we can (and have already) significantly increased our audience. ”
Telegraph Method
“Social sites like Digg, Reddit and Fark allow users to select articles that they like and characterize them. All we did was make our articles easier to get to these sites by adding a “share this” button under each of them. In this case, the user can add their own title and comment, thereby expressing their assessment. Continuing to publish a large amount of good content, we found that readers like to play with it. ”
Here are two recent Digg examples he gave:
We continue to involve users
“We have successfully worked together with these social sites and will continue to build tools and services that will allow us to interact and work with our content when we redo our site. We consider the need to develop the functionality of working with content as the same as taking account of search engine optimization measures when creating a website. We are open and trying to work with social networks directly, we develop products and services that will help, involve the members of these networks. An example of such work is the introduction of the Digg widget in the “Did you see it?” Section on our website. In the context of the changing role of newspapers in the digital world, it is very important to be able to adapt and collaborate with new services and social media to ensure maximum distribution of content. ”
