NY Times Hires Social Media Editor

The print press continues to press down on themselves blogs, twitter and other social media used by journalists. Less than a week after the scandal in the Wall Street Journal, which introduced real censorship of the Internet communication of its employees (journalists now have to coordinate almost any post in their personal blog with the editor), and here is a new message.

John Landman from the New York Times yesterday said that they had a new employee at the editorial office - the editor of social media. A fragment of internal correspondence between newspaper employees, where Landman introduces a new colleague to his subordinates and explains what she will do, has been leaked from one of the NYTimes employees to online.

Her list of responsibilities includes promoting the newspaper on Twitter (where the NY Times is second only to Ashton Kutcher in terms of readership) and other social media. At the same time, the main goal is to get readers to the original site, because, as stated in the letter, “terribly many people learn about new articles not from our site, but through messages on the Internet from friends and colleagues.” According to the management of the NY Times, this is bad. People should spend time on their website (the newspaper is now building its own social network, Times People), waiting for the appearance of interesting articles, and not go there only occasionally to read the text on the link on Twitter.

That is, the "party policy" continues. Journalist articles belong to the newspaper. He has no right to attract an audience to his personal blog, and also has no right to even quote his own articles. The entire audience should go to the website of the newspaper.
