PC Magazine Magazine Goes Online

Since February, PC Computer Magazine, a well-known computer magazine, has completely ceased publication on paper . Only online edition will remain.

Founded in 1982, PC Magazine was one of the most successful IT publications in the world. One of the indicators of its success is the amount of advertising. So, sometimes it was such a huge amount that the American edition came out on 500 and even 600 pages. However, the time of glory is over, although now the PCMag brand is profitable and generates income of several tens of millions of dollars , taking into account localized versions that have bred around the world, including the Russian PC Magazine / RE (by the way, this magazine, published since 1991, will continue its existence: an exclusive comment by the chief editor Oleg Lebedev (see under the habrakat).

Now almost the entire potential audience of the magazine receives information from the Internet. Even the magazine itself already receives about 70% of the profits from a network of affiliated sites . The continuation of the printing business is clearly unpromising.

The farewell release of American PC Magazine will be published in January. Almost all 140 employees, however, will save work and will work on the online version of PCMag.com .

"Plans for the" outcome "in the network have been known for quite some time, and are gradually being implemented. Thus, the year before, the print version was reduced, and in the past PC Magazine switched from 24 numbers to 12. At the same time, the magazine sharply increased online activity. The number of reviews has increased significantly, as well as activity in promotion. In addition, in recent years, American PC Magazine has significantly reoriented to the consumer market, and there is not much need for a “print”: why print a cell phone review on paper, if by the time the number goes on sale a new model will be released?

As for the Russian edition of PC Magazine / RE, there are no plans to stop the print version. Firstly, there is no need for this, since the magazine has its own stable audience and subscribers, a decent percentage of whom are written by PC Magazine / RE for at least five years. And there are those who have already signed ten, but these are, of course, champions.

Secondly, Russia is not the United States, we still have paper in demand, especially when it comes to regions. There you can still say that there is a subscription with payment in Sberbank.

And thirdly, we have a slightly different nature of materials, in particular, we have more articles for the SMB segment: system administrators, IT staff, developers, IT managers who make decisions about purchasing equipment, etc. These materials, by definition, have a longer life cycle, this knowledge and competence. And knowledge is always in the price, and today it is especially ”.
