Dashboards. Part I

In today's article we will talk about Dashboards (dashboards, dashboards, control panels, or, as I prefer, dashboards :).

What is meant by dashboard? In the modern world, dashboards are understood (I think everyone understands English and will be able to translate themselves):

A dashboard, dash board, or simply dashboard (or sometimes facia in British English) is It contains indicators, dials, controls and displays of assist operation of the vehicle. Originally a “dashboard” was upraised, upholstered by the horse’s hooves

It is worth noting, of course, that dashboards can be attributed not only to the car, but also to many other mechanisms and systems, including computer ones.

Designing a dashboard is nothing more than designing a user interface for man-machine, man-system, and even system-system. This UI design area is more relevant than ever today.

In the dashboard (as in the system application screen), we can clearly distinguish five main properties: Dashboard = 1) visual presentation 2) the most necessary information, 3) grouped and arranged in a special way, 4) which is necessarily located on one screen of the system or in another limited space 5) and change which can be conveniently and quickly track.

When designing dashboards, one should proceed from the definition and not make typical mistakes. Stephan Few highlights the main ones:
  1. support for scrollers, unnecessary breakdown of information into parts, displaying information on multiple screens;
  2. support for incorrect data format;
  3. display of unnecessary detail of the data;
  4. use of insufficient scale or unit of measurement;
  5. wrong choice of the type of information display;
  6. use of insufficiently effective types of graphs;
  7. poor organization of information on the screen;
  8. insufficient allocation of important and necessary information;
  9. excessive use of unjustified animation and other design effects;
  10. improper use of colors.
