writes about the imminent release of the full version of Microsoft Office's online competitor,
Google Apps for Your Domain .
Work on a set of services that can replace familiar local applications for corporate customers began last year.
Google built services for GApps brick by brick: something was developed independently, something was acquired and refined.
At the moment it is expected that the following web applications will be included in the “full package”:
-
GMail - email service
-
Google Talk - messenger with the ability to communicate by voice
- Google Calendar - calendar organizer
- Google Docs - editor for text documents and spreadsheets.
- Page Creator - a service for creating web pages

Unlike
Microsoft products, Google Apps uses full online data storage. To work with this “office suite”, the power of the computer or the operating system do not really matter. This may be one of the main arguments in favor of this proposal in the market of office applications for corporate clients.
In addition, Google representatives say, the final version of Google Apps will not yield to Microsoft Office in terms of stability, while its cost and maintenance costs will be lower. Educational institutions will be able to access Google Apps for free.
At the same time, online storage of data will most likely not attract large corporations that care about data integrity. In such companies they prefer to store data “on their territory”, where there is less risk of hacking or accidental loss of information.
Thus, web applications are of greater interest for small and medium businesses. Already, before the official introduction of the Google Apps package, thousands of companies are “testing”.
Microsoft has prepared its answer - in the form of Office Live. The principles of its work are approximately the same: online access to editors of documents and spreadsheets, online organizer, etc. According to statistics, Office Live is used by 250,000 small companies, and the full range of functions costs $ 39.95 per month. According to Chris Capossela, Microsoft has solid experience in working with corporate applications that competitors do not have.
One of the most intensive endurance tests of Google Apps started in October 2006: then the developer company itself “switched” all its employees to new applications. Google employees turned out to be one of the most demanding users: they are used to working with Microsoft Outlook and Oracle Calendar. Having "lost" some of the comforts of the previous system, they overwhelmed the Google Apps development department with requests for new features (approximately 1000 requests in the first 2 weeks of use).
