Antitrust measures against Google: new details and old accusations

According to The Wall Street Journal, a member of the European Parliament’s economic affairs committee, Ramon Tremosa, suggested toughening antitrust measures against Google. The parliamentarian concluded that the company is violating the rules of competition, based on a new investigation by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Back in 2012, the FTC accused Google of abusing its dominance over other search engines. However, in 2013, the company made concessions, and the charges were dropped.

"This new testimony is of tremendous significance, and it appeared as if it were not on time," notes Tremos. He takes a rather tough position on this issue and fully shares the point of view of the European Parliament on the need to split Google into two independent companies.

Recently, the details of the FTC 2012 report, which describes how Google promotes its projects on individual search queries, were disclosed .

In addition, it was mentioned in the materials that the company borrows content and databases from competing services such as Yelp, TripAdvisor, and Amazon.com, and also lowers them in search results.

“We received confirmation that US companies are complaining about Google’s dishonest practices. This means that the EU’s measures against Google cannot be considered protectionism against the American company, ”concludes Tremos.

Recall that recently, in February 2015, on the basis of a complaint from the Russian company Yandex, the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia also filed a case against Google, and moreover, Yandex supported the FairSearch alliance.

European competition commissioner Margaret Vestager will continue his own investigation, but the implications for Google of the new FTC report and other complaints depend more on the relevant US departments.

In spite of everything, Google’s view of the current situation: “Attempts to show that we could harm consumers have completely failed. The investigation was discontinued two years ago, and since then, the possibilities of consumers wishing to receive information have only expanded, people are offered more and more choices, ”said Google Walker General Counsel.
