Nintendo is going to enter the market of games for smartphones
According to Wired , the manufacturer of Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo is going to enter the market of games for smartphones. To this end, Nintendo is joining forces with another Japanese company, DeNA, to create mobile games for the franchise. Both companies are going to make an exchange of shares: Nintendo will acquire a 10% stake in DeNA for $ 182 million, and DeNA will buy out a 1.24% stake in Nintendo for the same amount.
At a joint press conference, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced his intention to aggressively enter the mobile device market. Previously, Nintendo refused to work with the mobile market, since most of the games are distributed here on a shareware or completely free model. Management was concerned about losing a significant portion of the revenue of the console games market, along with the previous audience of gamers.
Despite the fact that sales of the Wii U and 3DS are not going too well, Itoru said that the company is not going to give up the production of gaming hardware. In particular, next year the concept of a new gaming platform, codenamed 'NX', will be discussed.
Nintendo and DeNA plan to create a new "club" program for users, which will replace the current loyalty program Club Nintendo.
