Wikimedia Foundation sues US National Security Agency

The Wikimedia Foundation, manager of the open online encyclopedia "Wikipedia", announced the filing of a lawsuit against the US National Security Agency (NSA) and the US Department of Justice.

According to the initiators of the lawsuit in open request, the practice of mass spying on correspondence violates the rights of citizens to its secrets. Earlier, the NSA explained the legality of surveillance by the fact that it is conducted only for foreign citizens and is regulated by the law on the control of foreign intelligence activities of 2008.

Wikimedia claims that, in reality, the correspondence tracking program covered the messages of both residents and non-residents of the country, which is a violation of the law and the US Constitution.

The lawsuit was prepared by the Wikimedia Foundation in conjunction with the National Association of Criminal Lawyers, the Global Women's Rights Foundation, Human Rights Watch organizations, Amnesty International, the American PEN Center, and other human rights organizations.

Preparations for filing a lawsuit began shortly after Edward Snowden published the details of the PRISM program.
