Women who have changed business

image One hundred years ago, when women could not vote, and African-Americans were discriminated at the legislative level, Sarah Breedlove (Madame C.J. Walker) realized the American dream: she became a millionaire, being a woman and an African-American at the same time.

At the age of seven, Sarah became an orphan, became a widow at twenty, and remained with her little daughter in her arms. She began to study hair care. Due to her own problems, she began experimenting with products that treat hair loss.

Sarah Breedlove developed a therapy for hair growth, and the second husband helped her to make an advertisement. And convinced her to use another name - Madame C.J. Walker. Traveling in the US, she advertised her products and trained women to use them, with the result that the business was valued at one million dollars. In addition to helping women become more beautiful, she inspired them and gave them confidence in their own abilities.

The comparative purchasing power of one million dollars in 1919, the year of Bridlav’s death, amounts to $ 13.5 million for 2015.

image After Bridlove's death in 1919, it took another 53 years for the woman to lead the company from the Fortune 500.

It was Caitrin Graham, who became the CEO of the Washington Post in 1972 and worked in this position for more than twenty years. The Watergate scandal came to her board, because of which the US attorney general said that "Kate Graham risks getting stuck * with a certain part of the body * in a huge squeezing machine, if this (article denouncing Richard Nixon) sees the light." Nixon resigned after this scandal.

The article came out, and the memoirs of Catherine Graham, written by her in 1997, brought the author the Pulitzer Prize.

In June 2014, out of the 500 heads of the Fortune 500 list, four women are CEOs. Much more time must pass before we see equality. Facebook's operating director, Cheryl Sandberg , has been striving to speed up this process - one of the 50 “most influential women in business” according to Fortune since 2008. Emma Watson, UN Goodwill Ambassador, calls for gender equality. Richard Branson notes that Virgin learned and appreciated how important women leaders can be to the success of a company.

Why am I writing about this?

Dear girls and women - I congratulate you on March 8! Stay beautiful and be successful!
