Yesterday, Sony announced a spin-off (separation from a corporation into separate business units) departments dealing with audio and video technologies, similar to how in 2014 the Vaio notebook division and the TV development department separated from the parent company.
The Verge
writes that in the short term this makes little difference, but in the medium and long term this decision will seriously affect the future look of the company. After several years of promising Sony Single from Kaz Kaza Hiraya, the company still brings unprofitable divisions into a separate business that buyers are looking for.
According to the latest statements by Sony management, the company plans to leave 3 main areas:
- Sony Pictures Entertainment - the acclaimed Hollywood studio;
- PlayStation - for now, one of the most profitable parts of Sony, with good sales results for the new PS4;
- The division of "Image Sensors", which is so far successful because of their use in the Apple iPhone.
With the latter part of the business, problems can arise at any time if Apple simply decides to change the supplier of sensors for phone cameras.

But with the PlayStation, most likely, nothing will happen - Kaz Hirai was in the past the head of this direction and over time gave more and more preferences to the gaming component of the business, which showed good dynamics of development and sales in absolute terms.
Thus, Sony hopes to get rid of the unprofitable part of the business in order to increase its own marginality in the horizon of the next 3-5 years.
