Ubuntu 8.04.1 update released

Two months after the release of Ubuntu 8.04, the first update of the distribution was released - 8.04.1, in which more than 200 packages were updated. Release 8.04.1 is a kind of reference point and differs from Ubuntu 8.04 only by updating the installation images, with the inclusion of the accumulated fixes of serious errors and security problems. The update is also available for other Ubuntu products - Kubuntu, Kubuntu KDE4 remix, Gobuntu, Xubuntu, UbuntuStudio and Mythbuntu.

Some of the most important fixes are:

* The composition includes the final version of Firefox 3.0 (Ubuntu 8.04 release included the fifth beta version). GNOME updated to release 2.22.2;
* LANMAN authentication is enabled in the samba client, without it, problems of connection with some NAS and old Windows servers were observed;
* Fixed problems in the FUSE interface to the GNOME VFS;
* Simplified procedure for selecting the time zone on the installation LiveCD;
* The Hardware Drivers application no longer claims that the proprietary nVidia driver is active, although in fact it is not even installed;
* “Transmission” menu item renamed to “Transmission BitTorrent Client”;
* Fixed several problems related to the sound subsystem, for example, the effect of stuttering when playing music on a loaded system. Unfortunately, not all the problems were corrected, as to correct some, we would have to break the compatibility with the original release;
* The installer now has the “only free software” setting, choosing which after installation will not activate the 'restricted' repository. Fixed problems when using Wubi, - win32 program for installing a preliminary version of Ubuntu 8.04 directly from Windows without the need to create new disk partitions. The work of the installation system over the network (netboot), which previously led to the failure of the installer component at the stage of loading, has been established;
* Fixed problems with the work of graphics cards based on Intel chipsets. The inclusion of composite mode for cards based on i815 has been canceled;
* Disabled display on the desktop mount points to which the user does not have access;

Let me remind you that the support for the release of updates and bug fixes for the desktop edition of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS will last until 2011, and the server support until 2013.
