In connection with the release of the new version of fring with add-ons support, Mobile Review editors interviewed Alex.
MR - Developing an open API - is this a tactical move to attract new users or is it a strategic development line for fring? What, in your opinion, is the main difference between fring and other similar programs?
Alex Nerst (A.N.) - The main purpose of fring is to provide users with the best mobile interface for any Internet application or service.
Initially, VoIP, IM, and the generalized contact list were the main services provided by fring. The next stage is based on the basic features to give users additional opportunities in using the Internet. Some additional features will be developed by the fring team, but we still believe that most of them will be provided by third-party fringAPI developers.
We provide API [app. - Application Programming Interface] on very flexible terms: the API can be obtained for free, moreover, we do not limit any commercial use of the API and Add-ons. This means that developers can provide their add-ons to subscribers on a paid basis or monetize the possibility of placing ads on add-ons without financial intervention from fring. Thus, fringAPI is a kind of catalyst for the realization of our vision of the mobile Internet.

fringAPI is not an alternative to such common mobile Internet platforms as, for example, Flash Lite and Silverlight, it focuses on providing developers with the opportunity to use unique fring functions, such as aggregation of various communities in one client, connection “always-online”, the graphical interface inherent in mobile applications, integration into a mobile device — use all of this in order to present their Internet services and applications like fringAdd-ons.
