Viacom secretly uploaded videos to YouTube

Yesterday, several hundred pages of documents from Viacom's media corporation v. Google (YouTube) were leaked into open access, under which Viacom is demanding $ 1 billion in damages from the defendant for copyright infringement of video clips and TV shows.

The documents contain internal correspondence between the owners of the YouTube service and representatives of Google, from which it follows that they all seem to know about pirated materials, but do not want to remove them in order to increase site traffic.

The content of these documents was commented on by YouTube ’s chief lawyer Zahavah Levine. According to him, the line of defense of YouTube is built on two arguments. Firstly, Viacom has consistently made active attempts to buy YouTube and used litigation to pressure it. Second, they hired 18 media agencies to upload their own content to YouTube to use these materials as evidence of copyright infringement.

Agencies specifically worsened the quality of the video, so that the videos appeared recorded from the air. YouTube accounts were registered to clean email addresses, and Viacom agents visited Internet cafes to download content.
