MTS is ready to invest $ 200 million in 3G

This year, MTS is ready to invest about $ 200 million in the deployment of a 3G network in Russia, the company's top management said. The company is working on a business plan for the future construction, the theses of which will be published in the second half of May of this year. MTS President Leonid Melamed said that no more than two manufacturers will use the equipment in the deployment of 3G networks. Among suppliers, a tender will be announced in April-May 2007, Prime-TASS reports.

Experts believe that MTS is one of the first applicants to receive a 3G license from Rossvyaz, which makes it possible to provide third-generation cellular services in the W-CDMA / UMTS standard. Another most likely winner of the state competition is VimpelCom.

Since information was received from the top officials of Rossvyaz that operators who declared the largest amount of planned investments could receive priority in the state 3G tender, it would be logical to mention another promising player. Grid Company, being an alliance of three regional operators (Tele2, SMARTS and New Telephone Company), promised to invest in the first stage of its construction about $ 1 billion - however, without specifying how long this first stage will take. The total coverage of the alliance, according to its participants, includes 36 subjects of the federation, plus there are agreements with the mobile companies of another 20 regions of the country.

Analysts have repeatedly pointed out that participants in the GSM market are striving to deploy W-CDMA / UMTS networks, in particular, for the benefit of image. The operator, who will deploy the first 3G network, will be positioned as the most high-tech, they say in J'son & Partners . At the same time, analysts of the company note that it is not easy to enter 3G - despite the “ridiculous” amount of the stated licensing fee of 2.64 million rubles (about $ 100,000). Conversion of radio frequencies will have to be carried out at their own expense, and this will require a serious investment of money and time. J'son & Partners estimates the cost of spectrum cleaning at $ 200 million - i.e. just as much as MTS is going to invest in the construction of a 3G network in the first stage.
