If it were not for Google

Management errors of one company can have a significant impact on the success of another. So it was with Yahoo! having the third most popular search engine in the world. In 1997, Yahoo! I didn’t buy BackRub technology from two Stanford students, because of what I didn’t build PageRank into my search engine and didn’t prevent the creation of Google, a corporation whose turnover is about 20 times higher than Yahoo! ..

In 1997, Yahoo had the chance to buy BackRub, a technology developed by two students from Stanford, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. But the company did not do this, and the students a year later launched the Google search engine. It looked like the Google homepage in 1998.

A few years later, in 2002, the president of Yahoo! Terry Semel suggested that Google owners sell the company for $ 3 billion. Google executives refused - too low price. At that time, Google earned 240 million annually, Yahoo! - 837 million. Therefore, Terry did not dare to scrape the bottom of the barrel and find 5 billion dollars. Instead, he bought the search engine Inktomi for 257 million and the market leader in search advertising Overture for 1.4 billion dollars, "saving" more than 3 billion.

But in 2004, Google entered the IPO and the company's capitalization was more than $ 23 billion, while Yahoo! there were technical problems with "purchases".

Probably a Yahoo! with the technology of Page and Brin would be a quality product, maybe even better than Google. But even the best product can destroy the wrong leadership, and Semel would hardly have made an analogue of the current Google from the company.

Let's imagine that the transaction took place in 1997. Would another company develop unmanned vehicles , work hard in the field of robotics, artificial intelligence? Who would suggest using “clouds” to geneticists, moreover, would develop a repository specifically for this purpose? It is difficult to imagine another corporation that would deal with such a wide range of developments. Although there is Microsoft R & D Labs and Facebook trying to make the Internet accessible worldwide using the Internet.org project, the work of these companies is as close as possible to the business.

Google, by contrast, operates a scientific method. Few corporations will have enough resources for this method. But it’s hard to argue with the fact that without Google, there would be a huge hole in the world of technology, even if we didn’t know about it.
